I got a chance to read this great "insight" from a friend's xanga page and I thought I'd share with you all..

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air ... but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.

All of the Above

I got to hang out with a penguin this week.  They're really funny animals (birds, if you're anal like that).  I'm not a National Geographic nerd but what you and I have seen on TV is pretty much exactly how they roll.

My boss took a group of us as a treat to this back area to meet a trainer and they let one of them out of the fence for us to 'play' with.  It waddled around and didn't make any attempt to get our attention.  She told us it was OK to pet it so we did but even then it just looked straight forward or down.  It made a break for the door a few times but it never really had a chance since it moved so slow and goofy.  Occasionally it would point it's beak straight in the air, make this strange squawking noise, then looked straight down at the ground like it was ashamed of something.

It was so disinterested in us that when I described the experience to my oldest brother, we started exchanging and entertaining our ideas on what the penguin could have been thinking when me and my coworkers were in there.  Here's what we came up with.  All five of you who still read xanga can respond with which one you agree with.  *Hyung, if I left any part out or didn't do your side justice, feel free to leave an addendum under this post.

For the sake of the story and identity, I will name our little friend Megatron.

My brother suggested:
Megatron - 'I hate these people.  What the hell is wrong with them?  Why do they keep touching?  I just stand here and ignore them.  I don't even do anything special.  Let me eat my fish.'

My hypothesis was more based on his escape routine:
'If I can stand here long enough and not pay attention to them, maybe they'll forget I'm here and I'll make a break for it,' says Megatron.  As the trainer starts talking to us about penguin facts, he says, 'GO TIME!!' and starts running (or waddling a little faster than usual but still at a really slow speed) towards the exit.  It only takes the trainer only about 1.5 steps to catch up and block its path.
'Long-legged freak woman.... I'll TRICK YOU!!' so then he starts doing his squawking routine and looks straight down in a pretense of disappointment.  We're so confused and amused that we're distracted again so then he repeats his diabolical scheme of escape.

Anyway, here's a picture of me and Megatron.  As you can see, I am holding/petting him but he really doesn't care and he's looking at the exit.  Or maybe he's just wondering why I am touching him.  Who knows......

National Prayer Day

It makes the world of difference in my day when I pray in the morning before starting my daily activities.  Try it!  Or you just scared you might like it?

Prayer for Our Nation
by Charles R. Swindoll, 2007

Almighty God, we pause to reflect on Your character as we seek wisdom for such a time as this. In these unsafe days, You remain all-powerful and able to protect; In these uncertain times, You remain all-knowing, leading us aright; In the unprecedented events we’re facing, You remain absolutely sovereign. Our times are in Your hands. Therefore, our dependence on You, is total, not partial . . . our need for Your forgiveness is constant . . . our gratitude for Your grace is profound . . . our love for You is deep. We ask that You guard and guide our President and all who serve the people of these United States. May uncompromising integrity mark their lives. We also ask that You unite us as truly "one nation, under God." May genuine humility return to our ranks. And may that blend of integrity and humility heal our land.  In our Lord’s name we pray,

Amen

Google Maps is so much better than MapQuest...

Prepare to be amazed.

1. go to www.google.com
2. click on "maps," above the search bar...
3. click on "get directions"
4. type "New York" in the first box (the "from" box)
5. type "Paris" in the second box (the "to" box)
6. click on "get directions"
7. scroll down to step #23

Google is the #1 company to work for according to Fortune, and this is probably why.  Funny...
